Free Radicals Are Costly Thieves

The immune system creates free radicals like, superoxide and nitric oxide, in order to send them out to poison the body’s foreign invaders, such as bacteria and viruses. It also uses free radicals to mark damaged cells for destruction. The mitochondria of a cell often produces free radicals when preforming its work. So why all the talk about the horrors of free radicals? Because free radicals disrupt cells by stealing electrons from them.

The Atom’s Structure

Before the details of free radical damage can be understood a little bit about cell science needs to be explained. Every atom has both protons, with a positive charge, and neutrons, with no charge, at their center. Electrons, with a negative charge, circle around the protons and neutrons. The electrons pair up in outer layers called ’shells’. The first shell can hold only 2 electrons, the next shell 8 and each shell thereafter can hold more and more. Visualize the whole unit looking like a solar system with the sun playing the part of the protons and neutrons, and each planet representing a shell.

During the 1930s the Italian government drained Rome’s Pontine swamps. For centuries these swamps had been notorious breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which caused malaria among the population. As predicted by the government the destruction of the insects resulted in the disappearance of the disease. But what was unforeseen was that with the elimination of malaria came an increase in the cancer rate. Before the swamp was dried out the local people had never suffered from cancer. Eventually medical researchers realized the attack of the high fevers malaria brings was both destroying the cancer cells, and stimulating the body’s immune system to keep cancer from developing into tumors.

Nobel Prize is Given for the Reason Cancer Occurs

It is dumbfounding how the medical profession keeps searching for the answer as to how cancer develops while ignoring the discovery made over 75 years ago by Dr. Otto Heinrich Warburg. In 1931 Dr. Warburg was given the Nobel prize in medicine for discovering cells starved of oxygen will lose the ability to burn the glucose it receives. These cells will either die, or learn to produce energy by fermenting the glucose. Fermentation only creates 1/6 the energy a cell using the oxidization process makes. Once a cell has converted to fermentation as its power source the cell can never go back to being an oxidizing cell.
